After chase from Charlotte to York County, car containing pot ends up in lake, officials say
A suspect was taken into custody and vehicle with about two pounds of marijuana inside ended up in Lake Wylie Thursday night after a police chase from Charlotte into York County, officials said.
The pursuit started in Mecklenburg County and ended around 8 p.m. on the 3200 block of Lake Wylie Drive near Rock Hill, according to Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office dive team recovered 419 grams of marijuana in the Dodge Charger that was driven into the water, Faris said. An open container of alcohol also was found in the car, Faris said.
Dive team officers also recovered a Ruger handgun in the water, Faris said.
The pursuit went from Charlotte south on Interstate 77 then west toward the lake, Faris said.
Deputies have charged the driver of the car, Kendell Xzavier Jackson, 27, of Charlotte, with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, failure to stop for a blue light, no driver’s license, open container in a vehicle, and fugitive from justice, according to Faris and York County jail records.
Jackson is being held without bond at the York County jail, sheriff’s office records show.
York County sheriff officials said in Facebook and Twitter social media posts the pursuit was a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department case.
Efforts to reach CMPD Friday about the initial incident and pursuit were unsuccessful.
Private video from the scene was posted on Facebook by a neighbor near the site where the chase ended. That video, published by WSOC-TV, showed CMPD officers with weapons drawn taking a suspect from the water near a car that was half-submerged at the shoreline.
Other private video showed dive teams and police boats at the scene where the suspect was taken into custody.
