Clemson University’s football team may not be currently ranked this season, or even atop the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the city is leading another set of rankings.

WalletHub ranked Clemson, South Carolina as the top small sports city in the United States, beating out Tuscaloosa, Alabama and State College, Pennsylvania.

WalletHub based its rankings on the percentage of adults who follow football, basketball, hockey, soccer and basketball in each municipality. It also looks at how favorable conditions are for sports fans. The site, which provides financial reviews of cities, included 392 large, mid-sized and small cities in its analysis.

Other Upstate cities also made the rankings among 226 small sports cities, with populations of less than 100,000 people, included in the analysis.

Greenville ranked 22nd, Spartanburg 29th and Clinton 99th among small cities, according WalletHub.

Conway, home of Coastal Carolina University, ranked 37th among small cities. Orangeburg was 120th and Rock Hill was 143rd in small cities. Myrtle Beach and its tourism-based economy was ranked 175th among small cities when it came to sports.

Three mid-sized South Carolina cities with between 100,000 and 300,000 people also made the rankings.

Columbia, home of the Gamecocks, ranked 34th, while Charleston ranked 17th and North Charleston was 63rd in the 105 cities included in the mid-sized category.
