The holidays are fast approaching, and with them, holiday events at Riverbanks Zoo and the South Carolina State Museum.

At the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, starting Nov. 20 and continuing through Dec. 30, visitors can walk through the zoo’s “Lights Before Christmas.” Kids and adults alike can say hello to Santa in his village, take a ride on the North Pole Express and Candy Cane Carousel and cook s’mores over flames — on top of seeing the light display. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for children. The light show will start at 5 p.m. nightly and close at 9pm.

At the S.C. State Museum, visitors can already start catching the movie “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4-D” at the museum’s theater. The 10-minute show features vibrating seats and artificial snow and tells the story of what happens when Rudolph ventures far from home after being teased for his abnormally red nose. The stop-motion animation film can be seen at the museum through Jan. 2, though the museum will be closed Nov. 24-25 and Dec. 24-25.

While at the museum, visitors can also see another short film that offers winter scenery and interactive effects: A movie called “Smallfoot 4D” that tells the story of a community of yetis that discover their first human.

Plus, on Dec. 2, the museum will light up its planetarium dome as a giant snow globe in a festive nod to the holiday season.

Tickets to the museum cost $8.95 for adults and $6.95 for children ages 3-12, with an extra cost to watch 4-D or planetarium shows.
