When a South Carolina man checked his lottery ticket on the job, he learned he was getting much richer.

He took a moment to bask in the $300,000 prize — then went right back to work, according to the S.C. Education Lottery.

“It was a huge relief,” the man said in a March 10 news release. “I’m going to enjoy it and hopefully retire eventually.”

The winner scored big after he went to the Cruizers convenience store in Florence, roughly 65 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. While at the North Cashua Drive location, officials said he bought a scratch-off ticket for the $300,000 Money Match game.

It turns out, his ticket beat 1-in-900,000 odds to win the game’s top prize. He took home $207,000 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.

“I can work a little easier, but it’s not going to stop me from working,” the lucky winner, who declined to be identified in a news release, told the S.C. Education Lottery.

Though he decided to continue working, other South Carolina lottery winners have reconsidered staying on the job.

In November, officials said a man could retire sooner than anticipated after he hit the jackpot.

And a woman quit her job after finding out her Powerball ticket was worth $2 million, The State reported in May.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
