Tax free weekend in SC has arrived. Here’s how to get the best deals
It’s again time to stock up on supplies and clothing for the new school year. But there’s no reason to pay top dollar when South Carolina’s sales tax holiday is here again.
The annual event began Friday and will last through Sunday. Computers, clothes and school supplies will all be purchasable without sales tax.
Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $24.5 million in tax-free items during the sales tax holiday, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
Here’s what you need to know about the sales tax holiday and how to get the most out of it this year.
- South Carolina is one of a few states that don’t place dollar limits on purchases that can be made tax free. So, while other states may waive sales tax only on items under $100 for instance, South Carolina has no such limits.
- Items placed on layaway will be taxed.
- The tax free weekend does include online purchases, as long as the item or items are ordered, paid for and accepted by the retailer during the event. Delivery can be made after the tax free event.
- Coupons are your friend. While the sales tax waiver is nice, don’t be afraid to use coupons and other promo codes to get even better deals.
- Buy a big-ticket tech item if you can. Since there is no maximum spending threshold, the Palmetto State’s tax free holiday is among the best times to buy a laptop or other type of computer. Plus, tech stores like Apple and Best Buy offer their own education discounts for back-to-school.
