Some SC Kroger shoppers might have bought vegetable products contaminated by listeria, FDA warns
Multiple vegetable products sold in South Carolina Kroger stores have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination, the Federal Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday.
The company GHGA has recalled ready-to-eat products sold to the grocery chain, such as fajita mix, salsas and diced vegetables, after its laboratory detected listeria in a single sample of a product.
Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA states. And although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, nausea and diarrhea a listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
“To date, we are not aware of any illnesses linked to this recall,” the FDA states.
The FDA notes that along with South Carolina, the products were sold in Kroger stores across Alabama and Georgia.
The products were sold to Kroger and distributed on Sept. 11 to stores. The FDA states that the sell-by date has expired and products have been removed from store shelves. Still, the FDA is warning that some of these products might be in consumers’ possession.
The sell-by dates and lot numbers are located on the top primary label of each product. The products were packaged in clear plastic containers.
Consumers who bought the products are urged to return them to where they were purchased for a full refund or to just discard them.
