Richland has the third highest STD rate per 100,000 residents among all counties in the U.S., according to NYRequirements.com.

The website’s report states that Richland has an STD rate of 1,939.4 cases per 100,000 residents. Hinds County, Mississippi, had the highest STD rate, with 2,253.2 cases per 100,000 residents.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, STD cases have surged in the U.S. in recent years. There were 2.5 million total STD infections in 2021, up from a record 2.4 million in 2020, the latest CDC preliminary data shows.

NYRequirements.com noted in a statement that its analysts compiled the report to know if certain areas of the country were being hit harder by this uptick in common STDs.

The report used county data collected through the CDC’s NCHHSTP AtlasPlus. Rates of the most common STDs in the U.S. were analyzed to determine the 50 counties with the highest rate of all STDs per 100,000 residents.

Only counties with 100,000 residents or more were included in the report. The list of STDs includes chlamydia, gonorrhea and primary and secondary syphilis.

Chlamydia was found to be the most common STD, with more than 1.5 million cases diagnosed in 2020.
