6 SC hospitals have among the best maternity care in the US, new report shows. Do you agree?
If you need maternity care in South Carolina, six hospitals stand above the rest, a new report shows.
The South Carolina hospitals were among 259 nationwide included in the latest Money magazine and Leapfrog Group’s Best Hospital for Maternity Care list. The 259 hospitals that made the cut are a combination of facilities that provide care for uncomplicated pregnancies and those that provide care for high-risk deliveries.
The list is based on maternity care data submitted for the annual 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. To qualify for the list, hospitals had to receive a B letter grade or higher on Leapfrog’s spring assessment.
Leapfrog is a nonprofit that has collected and published data on patient safety and quality care for more than two decades.
Here are the South Carolina hospitals included in the list.
- Baptist Hospital, Columbia
- Baptist Parkridge Hospital, Columbia
- Laurens County Hospital, Laurens
- Tuomey Hospital, Sumter
- McLeod Health Dillon, Dillon
- McLeod Health Clarendon, Manning
Other than earning a high enough grade on the Leapfrog survey, qualifying hospitals had to meet criteria specific to providing maternity care, including:
- Early Elective Deliveries
- Cesarean Birth
- Episiotomy
- DVT (deep vein thrombosis) Prophylaxis
- Bilirubin Screening
- High-Risk Deliveries (only applies to hospitals electively admitting high-risk deliveries)
Of the hospitals listed above, the first four are operated by Prisma Health, the largest health care organization in South Carolina. The other two are operated by the McLeod Health system.
“We are honored to have four of our hospitals included in the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care because it showcases the outstanding medical care of our physicians, nurses and team members,” Dr. Berry Campbell, maternal-fetal medicine specialist and OB/GYN department chair in the Midlands, said in a press release. “Each day our Prisma Health family has the privilege of caring for mothers bringing new life into the world.”
