A South Carolina bride made her long-awaited trip to the altar — and took a jab at the 15-year journey to get there.

Video shows Christie Walters Jefferies unfolding her wedding vows and blowing dust off of them. The wedding guests then burst into laughter as the groom looks on in shock, according to footage that their wedding venue and videographer shared online last month.

“When you have been together 15 years,” the text that was paired with the video read.

@theschoolhousevenue Absolutely hilarious! Extremely witty + clever move by our bride, Christie, the other weekend during their ceremony vow exchange As a tribute to being together almost 15 years, Christie decided to “blow the dust” off of her ceremony vows in preparation for reading her vows to Byron! Jefferies made the joke after she and her then-fiance, Byron, decided to write their own vows.

“I had been really emotional prior to the wedding,” the bride told McClatchy News on Nov. 13 in a Facebook message. “I wanted to do something to break the ice for me, and lighten the moment.”

It turns out, her groom sensed that something was out of place.

“I was like, something looks wrong with that paper,” Byron Jefferies told Good Morning America. “And then she blows it. And I was like, ‘Oh, you got me.’”

The moments were caught on camera at The School House Venue, located in the Greenville-area town of Travelers Rest. The facility has the same owners as the Ten Oh Eight Co, which took the video.

“We’ve had a lot of candid, cool moments, but they’re not original like this,” Sean Eads, who owns the business with his wife, told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “This was super original, and it was witty and it was funny. And it was also sensitive and emotional — it just had all the elements in a good video you just can’t reproduce.”

The post showing the Jefferies’ vows has gotten more than 21 million views and thousands of comments on TikTok. While one person called the moment the “the smartest joke I have ever seen,” another wrote that the bride “said so much with no words.”

For her part, Christie Walters Jefferies posted the hashtag #alwayslatebutworththewait1015, a reference to her Oct. 15 wedding date. She said the response to the video has been surreal.

“We’re happy that the video can make people smile, while showing how our love has survived life’s ups and downs,” she told McClatchy News.

She and her now-husband first met while attending Clemson University in 2006. They started dating a year later, but the recession, the loss of the groom’s dad and his decision to go to graduate school changed their timeline, WYFF reported.

After graduation, Byron Jefferies said he wanted to turn his attention to marriage. The two got engaged last year, Good Morning America reported.

“Being together for so long, one of the things that strengthens us together is that we laugh and joke all the time,” the groom told the news outlet. “Laughter is key to our relationship.”
