Still waiting on your SC tax rebate? How to check the status and calculate how much you’ll get

Even if you haven’t received your tax rebate from South Carolina yet, you can at least check on it and see how much you could get.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue has begun issuing rebates to taxpayers for as much as $800, the department announced on Monday.

State lawmakers in June approved the parameters for a tax rebate of $1 billion for South Carolinians. Eligible taxpayers had up to the extension deadline of Oct. 17 to file their state individual income tax return for 2021.

The state will directly deposit rebates into taxpayers’ bank accounts if the department has that information. Otherwise, taxpayers will receive paper checks.

“All rebates for those who filed returns by Oct. 17 should be sent before the end of the year,” a department statement reads.

How to check your rebate status

If you haven’t received your rebate yet, you can at least get some piece of mind and check on its status by clicking here. You will need your social security number or individual taxpayer identification number, along with line 10 from your 2021 SC1040 to get a status update.

How to calculate your rebate

According to the department of revenue, your rebate amount is based on your 2021 tax liability, up to a cap of $800.

Follow these steps to determine your tax liability and rebate amount.

  • Check your SC1040 for 2021 to see if there is an amount listed on line 10. If there is no amount, you will not receive a rebate.
  • Add your refundable credits on lines 21 and 22. Subtract those credits, if any, from what’s listed on line 15.
  • If the answer is less than $800, that is the rebate you will receive. If the answer is greater than $800, you will received a total of $800.
