South Carolinians didn’t wait until the Christmas holiday season to get into the generous spirit this year, GoFundMe data shows.

Online fundraising platform GoFundMe has released its end-of-the-year report, which lists South Carolina as the 8th most generous state in the U.S. for supporting people, causes and organizations this year.

Here are among the three most notable examples of South Carolina fundraising this year, according to GoFundMe.

  • When the war between Russia and Ukraine began, South Carolinians quickly responded with aid for two Ukraine-related GoFundMe causes: Zero Camps for Ukrainian Refugees and Ukrainian Voices.
  • South Carolina residents lent their support for the families of people who were lost tragically this year, such as Officer Austin Aldridge, who was killed in the line of duty. They supported the family of Lavel Davis, Jr., a South Carolina native who was killed during a shooting at the University of Virginia. South Carolina was also the leading fundraiser in response to a bus crash that killed members of the University of the Southwest golf team in Texas.
  • The Palmetto State also helped fund trips for the Clemson men’s and women’s lacrosse teams to play in the national championships in Round Rock, Texas.

Here is GoFundMe’s list of the 10 most generous states in 2022.

  3. Maine
  4. New Hampshire
  5. West Virginia
  6. Pennsylvania
