Here is how much SC money is in the second biggest, $1.35B Mega Millions jackpot

The Mega Millions game has reached its second-largest jackpot ever and a good amount of that has come from South Carolina.

Strong ticket sales have pushed the jackpot to $1.35 billion for the Friday drawing. The jackpot has a cash payout of $707 million.

But how much of that second-largest jackpot has come from South Carolina ticket sales?

South Carolina Mega Millions ticket sales were $27 million as of Thursday for the latest jackpot run, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery. That’s a decent chunk of change for tickets that start at just $2 each.

South Carolina players have seen a few billion-dollar jackpots lately. Friday’s drawing is the third jackpot to surpass $1 billion in the last six months. Mega Millions reached $1.3 billion in July, while Powerball grew to a record $2 billion in November.

Incidentally, a South Carolina woman was the largest single winner ever for Mega Millions, with a jackpot of $1.537 billion in in October 2018. The woman, who has remained anonymous, ended up testifying against her former “lottery lawyer,” Jason Kurland, who stole $80 million of her winnings.

The next Mega Millions drawing is set for 11 p.m. on Friday. South Carolinians interested in buying tickets must do so before 10 p.m. on Friday.

Odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 303 million.
