Big chain restaurants are popular and plentiful for good reason, but there’s nothing quite like dining at a small, locally-owned eatery.

Be it a diner, burger joint or barbecue shack, oftentimes locally-owned establishments offer foods and flavors you just can’t get anywhere else.

National publication Southern Living has recently compiled its annual list of the best locally-owned restaurants in every Southern state for 2023. The rankings were made using recommendations from Southern Livings’ readers.

“These places might not be the ones that win fancy accolades (although some have won James Beard Foundation awards and other honors), or even take reservations (although many of them do). They are the reliable restaurants Southerners turn to again and again for everyday meals and special occasions,” Southern Living wrote.

So, which locally-owned South Carolina restaurant is considered the best for 2023?

Page’s Okra Grill in Mount Pleasant won the designation this year. Located at 302 Coleman Blvd., Page’s stands out in a city full of destination-worthy dining, Southern Living wrote.

“The restaurant combines down-home charm with an irresistible menu of elevated but familiar Southern staples,” Southern Living wrote.

Co-owner and chef Ashleigh Page created the menu with help from her father, Tony Page. She also looked at hundreds of cookbooks to develop the restaurant’s many dishes, Southern Living wrote.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Southern Living suggests first-time visitors start with Page’s sampler platter, which includes fried spring rolls filled with barbecue and pimiento cheese, along with fried green tomatoes with roasted red pepper-and-peach jam, and shrimp bacon-chipotle cheese dip.

Next, order the chicken and waffles, which are loaded with cheddar cheese, sage sausage, roasted corn and jalapeños. If that sounds to heavy, then instead try the shrimp and grits, which come topped in a smoked andouille sausage cream sauce.
