Sophia Celentano, 21, who lives in Charleston with her parents, commutes to her New Jersey summer internship one day each week by plane because she found doing so is cheaper than renting in the New Jersey/New York area. Celentano recently revealed the commuting routine for her advertising internship on a TikTok video she posted.

The video has since gone viral.

“Honestly, it’s cheaper to stay in Charleston for the summer with my parents and just pay for plane tickets one day a week instead of paying for rent in New York full time,” Celentano said in the video as she put on makeup in preparation for her commute.

In the video, Celentano said that she wakes up at 3 a.m. to catch her flight from Charleston to Newark once a week. Ogilvy Health, her employer, requires interns to be in its one day a week.

Celentano wrote on her LinkedIn page that to save money, “rather than spending paying $3400+ a month for rent (the new average for leases in Manhattan), I book a $100 round trip flight from SC to NJ on the one day a week I work in-person.”

According to rent.com, a one-bedroom apartment in New York costs an average of $5,371 a month, as of June 14.

While Celentano said she is fine with commuting, she added in a separate video that the trip back home is by far the worst part of the journey.

“Early morning flights are very rarely delayed, but the past two times I’ve commuted home my flights have either been delayed or straight up canceled,” she said.
