Five South Carolina schools are among the best in the nation this year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The Department of Education recently awarded the five schools the title of 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Now in its 40th year, the National Blue Ribbons Schools Program recognizes outstanding public and non-public elementary, middle and high schools based on their overall high academic achievement or success in closing achievement gaps among diverse students.

Of the 353 schools chosen nationwide in 2023, here are the five South Carolina schools.

Coosa Elementary School

Location: Beaufort

School type: Elementary school/choice school

Sterling School

Location: Greenville

School type: K-12/choice school

Wren Elementary School

Location: Piedmont

School type: Elementary school

The goals of the program are to shine a spotlight on the best schools in the U.S. and to share best practices, the department states. Each year, the Department of Education works with state departments of education to identify and nominate outstanding schools based on student academic achievement measures and progress toward closing achievement gaps.
