And just like that, another Thanksgiving is nearly upon us.

Are you ready yet?

Thanksgiving is barely over a week away, meaning it’s time to start preparing by buying food and ingredients for the big meal if you haven’t already. But what about the weather in South Carolina on Thanksgiving? Have you thought about preparing for adverse weather that you may encounter traveling over the holiday?

Fortunately for many South Carolina holiday travelers, this Thanksgiving is shaping up to be rather tolerable where weather is concerned. Here’s what to know.

NWS Thanksgiving predictions

Nicole Rebarick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in West Columbia, said while it’s still too far out from Thanksgiving to be certain about the weather, forecasts are leaning toward South Carolina seeing temperatures in the upper 60s, which is slightly above average for the holiday. She added that much of the state could expect about normal chances of precipitation for the year during the holiday.

“But it’s hard to tell so far out, there’s still so much uncertainty,” Rebarick said.

Farmers Almanac predictions

The extended forecast from the Farmers’ Almanac predicts rain for the Southeast in the days leading up to the holiday but “then clearing, hopefully in time for Thanksgiving.”

Farmers’ Almanac adds that weather across the Southeast will likely be fair and cold for the following Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Founded in 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac uses a secret formula that includes components such as “sunspot activity, tidal action, the position of the planet,” to predict long-range weather forecasts. The forecasts are typically made two years in advance. Fans of the Farmers’ Almanac have, over the years, calculated that the predictions are accurate 80-85% of the time.

Fall weather in SC so far

South Carolina has had mostly uneventful weather during fall so far. During October, the state was about a degree above average max temperatures overall, Rebarick said. During September, temperatures were right on average.

“So far in November, we are a bit below normal,” Rebarick said of temperatures.

Will SC get snow this winter

It has never snowed on Thanksgiving in South Carolina, but the state gets the white stuff occasionally, normally in January or February, Rebarick said. However, it’s too early to predict if the state will get any snow this winter, she added.
