A historic downtown Columbia home didn’t last long on the real estate market.

Listed on Feb. 22, the three-story, foursquare-style house at 1026 Gregg Street was under contract in about two weeks.

The asking price was $895,000.

Built in 1907 and designed by the architectural firm of Shand and Lafaye, the 3,506 square-foot house has five bedrooms and three baths on about a third of an acre. It is located in the University Neighborhood Historic District, which includes 160 mostly residential properties east of the University of South Carolina’s campus.

The house has 10.5-foot ceilings and six fireplaces. (They all work.) One is in the primary suite that also includes two closets and a bathroom. Two other bedrooms have fireplaces as do the living, sitting and dining rooms.

The listing on the National Register of Historic Places says the outside is textured stucco and has a centered entryway with arched fanlight and sidelights and a balcony balustrade above. Nine Doric columns support the wraparound front porch with spindle railings. The hipped roof contains a front gabled dormer.

The kitchen has marble countertops, stainless steel appliances, wine refrigerator and wet bar.

All the bedrooms are on the second floor and there is a studio apartment with a bathroom, shower, kitchenette and closet on the third floor.
