20-year-old fisherman vanishes while cooling off in creek. Body later found, SC cops say
A 20-year-old fisherman was found dead after vanishing on a South Carolina creek, officials said.
The man was fishing on Long Branch Creek when he “jumped into the water to cool off,” according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
“Bystanders attempted to rescue the man, but the current swept him away,” deputies wrote in a news release.
The sheriff’s office was called to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6. The disappearance was reported near Savannah Highway, which was shut down but later reopened.
Crews used a drone and sonar to search for the missing man, who was found dead hours later. Divers pulled his body from the water, according to deputies.
The man was identified as Angel Gabriel Martin Vasquez of Guatemala. He died from “asphyxia due to drowning,” the Charleston County Coroner’s Office wrote June 10 in a news release.
