A replica of the ship Ferdinand Magellan sailed in his attempt to circumnavigate the globe is in Charleston this week.

Tours of the Nao Trindad, a three-mast, 93-foot-long vessel, are available June 12-16, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cost for students is $5, $15 for adults.

Five ships, including Magellan’s Nao Trindad, sailed from Seville, Spain, on Aug. 10, 1519, crossed the Atlantic, sailed along the coast of South America, discovered the Strait of Magellan and crossed the Pacific Ocean for the first time in history, according to the website for the replica ship.

Two years after they set sail, the voyagers reached the Mariana Islands, the Philippines and the Moluccas, and then Trinidad sprang a leak in its hull. Companion ship Victoria made it back to Spain in 1522, but Tranidad, battered by bad weather, was forced to return to Moluccas, where it sank.

Magellan was killed in a fight with islanders in the Philippines on April 21, 1521.

The Trinidad was ultimately smashed by a storm.

Nevertheless, Magellan is credited with being the mastermind behind the idea of circumnavigating the globe.

The replica was built by artisans with historical precision over 14 months and launched on March 11, 2018. It has more than 1200 square feet of visiting area on four decks, captain cabin and living accommodations.

The floating museum has visited ports in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic European Coast and was last in Charleston in 2023.

The shop is docked at Charleston Maritime Center, 10 Wharfside St, in Charleston.

The ship sailed from Fernandina Beach and St. Augustine, Florida, where it had 15,000 visitors, according to Nao Victoria Foundation, which operates the tour.

The Nao Victoria Foundation is a nonprofit entity that teaches and researches maritime heritage.
