Many motorists may have fewer potholes to avoid in the Midlands after next year.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to pave and improve parts of dozens of major roads/primary routes across the Midlands in 2025. The work will be part of the department’s 2024-2025 Pavement Improvement Program for the state.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission approved spending $719 million on the roads project — part of a 10-year effort. This is the eighth year of the total $3.6 billion project, which has improved more than 8,800 miles to date.

How SC roads are picked

The road and street projects for the 2025 program were selected through a ranking process using objective and measurable criteria that align with the 10-year plan, DOT states. The ranking process also prioritizes a fair distribution of paving funds across all counties in the state.
