Rodents are headed for SC homes this winter and they bite. Here’s how to keep them out

Just as you’re thinking of cozying up before the fireplace, perhaps watching a Christmas movie, other creatures could be watching you.

Rodents.

Yep, and this week is rodent week, proclaimed by the National Pest Management Association.

The organization says each winter, rodents invade about 21 million homes, contaminating food, bringing disease and damaging property.

And they bite. The South Carolina Department of Public Health recorded 175 bites from rodents in 2023. That includes squirrels 71, rats 46, mice 20, and rabbits 10.

“Rodents are more than just a seasonal nuisance, they can pose real threats to both health and property,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, senior vice president of Public Affairs for NPMA.

His organization is pushing for people to get professionals to oust the critters.

Almost half of Americans know rodents are a problem, but only 17% will call someone for help.

“The threats posed by rodents are real so an infestation should not be treated as a DIY task,” Fredericks said.

Here’s what the pest management organization recommends:

  • Seal any cracks and holes: Inspect your home for small openings, especially around doors and windows, and use caulk or steel wool to seal them. Mice can fit through holes as small as a dime.

  • Keep food stored properly: Make sure all food, including pet food, is stored in airtight containers, and be sure to clean up crumbs and spills right away.

  • Declutter storage areas: Rodents often hide in piles of clutter, so keep basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces tidy and organized.

  • Inspect for signs of rodents: Look out for droppings, gnaw marks, or strange noises, especially in quiet areas like attics and basements.
