What makes somewhere a good place to raise a family?

Is it the local schools, your neighbors, or just being in a place where you can earn plenty of money to support children? Perhaps it’s a place with a low crime rate or where you can afford a large home?

SmartAsset, a financial advisor guide, recently compiled a study to determine the best places to raise a family in South Carolina. Factors including academic performance of students, housing equity, recreation and community centers per 1,000 people, and child care costs were all analyzed to produce the study. Data was pulled from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Zillow.

The research looked at all counties in South Carolina, but 10 stood out above the rest.

SC a popular state

South Carolina has been among the top states that people have moved to for years now. The latest annual National Movers Study from United Van Lines shows that South Carolina was the third most popular inbound state for 2024. Only Delaware and Virginia ranked higher.

The study also shows that lifestyle, family, and job were among the top reasons why people moved to the Palmetto State in 2024 — reasons that would fit into a larger “raising a family” category.
