A former volunteer firefighter was charged with arson in a failed attempt to frame his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, South Carolina police said.

Logan Driver — who had worked as a probationary volunteer firefighter with the Honea Path Fire Department for three months, according to the fire chief — reported three different crimes over a two-week span, the Honea Path police department said in a Jan. 20 news release.

Driver called the police department Jan. 7 to report malicious damage to property, then he called again Jan. 9 to report a burglary, authorities said.

When he made a third call Jan. 19 reporting arson, however, doorbell footage revealed Driver was the culprit in each incident, police said.

“Driver attempted to make police believe that his ex-girlfirend’s boyfriend was responsible for these incidents,” authorities said in the release.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree arson, filing a false report of a felony violation and filing false report of a misdemeanor, police said.

Honea Path Fire Chief Jimmy Smith told McClatchy News that Driver passed a background check before he began working with them.

“The Honea Path Fire Department fully investigated the cause of the fire, and assisted the Honea Path Police Department with information to make the arrest,” Smith said in a Jan. 21 email.

Driver was issued a $6,000 bond, and as of Jan. 21 he was being held at the Anderson County Detention Center, authorities said.

“Our message is clear: don’t start fires illegally,, and if you file a false report, you will be charged,” Police Chief Chris Miller said in the release.

Honea Path is about a 40-mile drive south from Greenville.
