Southerners love their fast food and South Carolina is no exception.

From burgers to fried chicken and tacos, fast food has become a staple of the South Carolinian diet — for better or worse.

Sure, you’ve got your classic national chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s that many people enjoy. But then there are more local or regional fast food restaurants in South Carolina that residents love, such as Bojangles.

If you had to pick a single local fast food spot to be your favorite, which one would you choose?

Yelp recently took up the challenge to create a guide of the top local fast food places in every state. The restaurants were ranked based on volume and ratings of reviews given by Yelp members. All of the businesses were marked open on Yelp as of Dec. 13.

Below is the local fast food joint picked as the favorite for South Carolina. To see the favorite local fast food restaurant for every other state, click here.

Nigel’s Good Food

  • Rating: 4 out of 5 stars with 850 reviews

  • Location: North Charleston

Nigel’s Good Food in North Charleston was selected as the top local fast food restaurant in South Carolina. The restaurant, which also has locations in Ladson and Hanahan, is known for serving low country soul food hot and fast.

“Get those Geechie Wings, and you won’t be sad about any of the fry baskets either,” Yelp states.

Executive chef Nigel Drayton and his wife, Louise Drayton opened the first restaurant. Before becoming a restaurant owner, Nigel Drayton worked his way up the culinary ladder in his hometown of Charleston, the restaurant’s website states. He started his career at 15 years old as a bus boy and by the age of 25, he held his first kitchen manager position.

Nigel’s menu includes offerings such as chicken and waffles, Lowcountry ravioli, shrimp and grits, and gumbo.

“1st class service from the minute I walked in to when I left,” Yelp reviewer Colin S. of Charleston wrote. “The menu is abundant, but I chose the fried chicken platter with mash, gravy, corn, and green beans, which was incredible.”

Yelp reviewer Shayla V. of Charleston wrote that for her visit, she and her family tried the Geechie wings as an appetizer and thought they were delicious.

“So plump and juicy, yet crispy, and the sauce is somehow sweet and savory with just the right kick all at once,” she wrote.

Even the sides like basic lima beans met with Shayla’s resounding approval.

“We (her and her husband) didn’t realize we both ordered lima beans, but we’re glad we both did because honestly, these were some of the best beans, period, that we’ve had,” she wrote.
