SC college student secures a place on ‘The Voice’ in an uncommon way. Here’s what happened
Florence native Grace-Miller Moody sang her way onto this season’s The Voice doing something few have done before.
She sang a Maroon 5 song featuring Adam Levine to his face.
Fellow coach Kelsea Ballerini, said, “Adam notoriously does not turn for his own song, so you have broken the code.”
In fact, all four judges turned their chairs around for Moody during the blind audition in which the singers begin singing to the backs of the judges.
Joining Levine for season 27 beside Ballerini are Michael Bublé and John Legend. Levine was one of the original “The Voice” coaches but left for several years.
Moody, a 20-year-old College of Charleston psychology student, said she sang “Sunday Morning” because she and her family saw Maroon 5 in Las Vegas after her younger brother Shott recovered from a years-long battle with leukemia.
The trip helped heal her family, including twin brother Dalton and parents, she said on a taped segment before she sang.
After she sang, Lambert made his pitch for selecting him as her coach.
“I can definitely help you get where you need to go,” he said. “You can win this thing.”
The other coaches made their own pitches and razzed Lambert a little bit, but to no avail. Moody selected Team Adam.
“It feels amazing. This whole experience has been crazy, meeting the people that I’ve met,” Moody said. “Going through the whole thing and having my family alongside has just been amazing.”
