A dog spent nine years as a “loving companion,” then she landed at a South Carolina shelter.

“She desperately needs a friend to guide her through her senior years in a happy, loving home,” the Charleston Animal Society wrote Feb. 16 on Facebook. “Though she may be a little shy when meeting new people, once she gets to know you, she becomes the ultimate cuddle buddy.”

Marnie the American staffordshire terrier is up for adoption after a journey that started nearly a decade ago. She was surrendered to the Charleston Animal Society in 2016 and soon was adopted. Then nine years later, she returned to the shelter in January.

Marnie had a microchip, a device that stores pet owners’ contact information. The shelter reached out to the pup’s adopter and her family members, but the owner didn’t respond, spokesperson Kay Hyman told McClatchy News via email.

As she waits for another chance, Marnie has become known as a “sweet” dog with a love for napping on the couch. A video posted on YouTube shows her soaking up attention.

“Marnie may be a bit older, but her affectionate nature and love for comfort make her the perfect companion for anyone looking for a calm, loving friend,” the shelter wrote. “Marnie, a 9-year-old pup with a heart full of love, is so dismayed to be at a shelter when she spent the first nine years of her life being a loving companion to someone.”

The shelter said Marnie sometimes is uncomfortable around other pups but could live with one who gives her space to warm up.

“We are adopting her out as hospice due to her age and medical concerns,” Hyman wrote. “Marnie has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and some concurrent arthritis/pain in the hips, as well as a low grade (Grade 2) mast cell tumor. We removed the tumor but there is a chance for it to reoccur or occur in multiple areas on the skin.”

As of Feb. 18, the shelter’s website still listed Marnie among the animals in need of homes. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at charlestonanimalsociety.org.

“Nine years old and all alone in this world,” the shelter wrote in a graphic posted to Facebook. “Will anyone want me?”
