GOBankingRates recently decided to find out how much house average Americans could currently afford in every state. More specifically, GOBankingRates analyzed each state to find out how much house you can buy for $300,000, $400,000, and $500,000.

Methodology
GOBankingRates analyzed housing affordability by state, using median listing prices and housing cost indices to determine how much house $300,000, $400,000, and $500,000 can buy. The study used the latest data as of January 2025 from the Federal Reserve of St. Louis and the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center.

This year may be a good time to buy a home in South Carolina, according to recent industry expert predictions. After years of soaring prices and declining sales that followed the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Carolina housing market has readjusted to a more typical state. The stabilization should carry with it a boost in sales and only moderate price increases in 2025, some experts say.According to the latest data from South Carolina Realtors, total home sales were up 2% in the state for January, year-over-year. Total median prices were up a modest 2.1% in January.
