Dog found in snow was ‘desperate’ for warmth. Rescue was just the start of good news

A “desperate” dog was rescued from the snow — but that was just the start of his lucky streak.

Chowder is now healing from injuries to his “mangled” leg. And after a few days of living in their home, his foster family has decided to keep him permanently, according to a South Carolina animal shelter.

“He’s brought so much joy that they told us: ‘Chowder is already home, and we can’t imagine our lives without him,’” the Greenville Humane Society wrote Feb. 19 on Facebook. “YES, you read that right! They have fallen completely in love with him and will be adopting him once he’s medically cleared.”

The heartwarming adoption comes after someone spotted Chowder in rough shape Jan. 10. At the time, a winter storm blanketed the Greenville area with about 1 to 2 inches of snow, McClatchy News reported.

“Found cowering under a cardboard box during the snowfall, Chowder was injured and desperate for a place to stay warm.” the shelter wrote in a January post. “He was all alone, just doing his best to survive.”

The shelter said the injured dog was brought to an emergency vet clinic, which contacted his owner. The team called several times, but the person on the other end blocked the number.

So Chowder landed at the humane society, where he became known as the “sweetest, most loving pup. To this day, even after seeing thousands of heartbreaking cases year after year, it still baffles us how pets are so forgiving. He trusted us immediately. He let us change his bandage without issue.”

As time passed, the 2-year-old German shepherd became more comfortable with walking. The “thriving” pup also got along with the children and other pets in his foster home, becoming a natural fit. Then came the good news that the family plans to adopt him when he’s eligible in a few weeks.

“Our hearts are soaring,” the shelter wrote in its latest post. “This isn’t the same Chowder found cowering under a box for shelter during the snowstorm. The wounds he came in with are nearly completely healed.”

Several Facebook users congratulated the pup on starting his next chapter, while others said the update made them cry tears of joy.
