For better or worse, big change has been part of President Donald Trump’s presidency since his January inauguration.

Trump during his brief time in office — through the Department of Government Efficiency led by billionaire Elon Musk — has fired or laid off thousands of federal workers and canceled grants and contracts, impacting organizations across the U.S.

The State wants to hear directly from you about how federal downsizing has affected you in South Carolina.

According to the Economic Policy Institute, approximately 43,153 federal workers live in the state. The data is based on the 2023 American Community Survey. The analysis rescales published ACS counts and margins of error so that the values are consistent with the January 2025 BLS Current Employment Situation federal government employment estimate of 3,024,000.
