Firefighters continue to fight a wildfire in Table Rock State Park that has grown since it first ignited on Friday.

The Pickens County wildfire has engulfed more than 1,300 acres and continues to expand, the South Carolina Forestry Commission states. Meanwhile, the nearby Persimmon Ridge Fire in Greenville County has grown to more than 800 acres.

Heavy winds and steep terrain have led to the growth of the fires. The firefighters have found it difficult to get heavier equipment to the scene and establish containment lines.

“Exacerbating the situation is an abundance of downed timber from Hurricane Helene, which has increased the fuel load on the mountain,” the forestry commission states.

At least six aircraft will be deployed for water-dropping missions on both fires on Monday, the forestry commission states. Additional aircraft will be used to provide surveillance and coordination between dispatch, ground personnel and command staff.

The voluntary evacuation of about 100 residences remains in effect just east of Table Rock State Park. Officials currently don’t expect further evacuations.
