‘Fortress of concrete and steel’ lists in South Carolina. See ‘WWII-era bunker’
Doomsday prepping is becoming more normalized these days. With hit entertainment glamorizing “end-of-the-world” scenarios (i.e. “The Last of Us” and “Leave the World Behind,”) it’s easy to understand why people might be on the lookout for sturdier housing.
And the perfect one has jumped onto the real estate market on Sullivans Island, South Carolina for $4.9 million.
A unique aspect: It’s a literal doomsday bunker that the right person can build on top of.
“Welcome to 3030 Brownell, a property that doesn’t just offer a home - it dares you to build a legacy,” the listing on Zillow says.
“Perched on a half-acre canvas just one block from the pristine shores of Sullivans Island, where the whispers of the Lowcountry meet the roar of opportunity. It’s a chance to craft a modern masterpiece atop a WWII-era bunker, a fortress of concrete and steel that could anchor a residence rivaling the most coveted estates on South Carolina’s coast.”
This four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 5,400-square-foot bunker was built in 1942, a year after the United States joined the Allied powers against the Axis powers in World War II. So not only was it built to withstand nature’s travesties, but also a key investment for doomsday preppers.
“The 5,000 sq. ft. bunker, with its 15-foot-thick walls and unyielding structure, sits 20’ above sea level, proven hurricane resistant through Hurricane Hugo when neighboring homes crumbled,” the listing says. “Imagine a sleek residence rising above with walls framing panoramic ocean views, and the bunker’s vast interiors reimagined as a private cinema, wine vault, or art gallery.”
Standing out is the home’s roof, which can hold the weight of another house.
“The rooftop can support a home and allows for blending cutting-edge design with the bunker’s raw strength. This is a build that could redefine Sullivans Island, a trophy property that commands attention and shatters records. Here lies the potential for a home that’s as unique as it is valuable, set in a community where charm and exclusivity intertwine,” the listing continues.
The residence was even featured on Zillow Gone Wild, a real estate Facebook page that highlights unique properties for sale around the country.
“I loved walking by this home when I was little. Sullivans Island will always be one of my favorite places,” one person said.
“My immediate thought upon seeing this place was that part of Return of the Jedi when Han Solo and Princess Leia are trying to break into the concrete compound in the Ewok forest to turn off the deflector shields,” another joked.
Sullivan’s Island is about a 10-mile drive southeast from Charleston.
