A shelter dog couldn’t walk — but now he zooms around in his wheelchair.

Bullet the pup has become a favorite at kids’ summer camps as he waits for a new home in South Carolina.

“Local students from many schools and grades 1-5 read books to him and enjoyed petting him and learning all about him,” Angel Cox, CEO of the Spartanburg Humane Society, told McClatchy News in a July 15 email. “He had loved our own campers at Camp Love a Pet.”

Bullet is up for adoption after he was picked up as a stray. He had trouble moving, so shelter workers thought he may have been hit by a car. Then they discovered the real culprit.

“He arrived to us unable to walk or wag his tail,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. “After x-rays and an ultrasound a bullet was discovered inside his body, hence his new name! Since he arrived without wounds, we know this was an old injury.”

Bullet, who suffered a fractured vertebrae in the shooting, had part of his tail removed for hygiene purposes. Though the shelter didn’t reveal his age or breed, it said he has become known as a “sweet” dog who’s “worth a little extra work.”

“We had a few sets of wheels that had been donated over the years so the team fitted him with wheels and he immediately took off,” Cox wrote. “He is super happy and loves his wheels.”

As of July 16, Bullet was still in need of a new owner. Details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at spartanburghumane.org.
