A 67-year-old woman died after trying to stop her dogs from fighting in South Carolina, officials said.

First responders were called to a home where a woman had been attacked by a dog. The woman was taken to a hospital on July 21 and died more than a week later, according to the Anderson County Office of the Coroner.

The deceased dog owner was identified as Mary Ann Orr.

“Preliminary investigation shows that the victim’s dogs began fighting and she tried to break the fight up when one of the dogs then turned on her and began attacking,” the coroner’s office wrote July 29 in a news release.

The tragedy unfolded at Orr’s home in Easley, a roughly 10-mile drive west from downtown Greenville. She died from “multiple traumatic injuries,” and her death was ruled an accident, according to officials.

As of July 29, Coroner Greg Shore said his office and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office were investigating Orr’s death.
