SC has one of the 10 best state fairs in the nation, USA Today says. See where it ranks
The South Carolina State Fair was ranked fifth best fair in the nation by USA Today.
The newspaper said a panel nominated their top picks and readers voted on their favorites.
“Whether you’re rating butter sculptures, enjoying thrilling rides, or taking in a concert, state fairs offer something for everyone,” USA Today said.
No. 1 was the Minnesota State Fair, held in St. Paul, Minnesota, which draws nearly 2 million visitors a year to its 320-acre fairground. This year, it will be held from Aug. 21 to Labor Day, Sept. 1.
The annual economic impact in the Twin Cities is about $290 million, comparable to hosting a Super Bowl, the fair website says.
The South Carolina State Fair will be held Oct. 8-19 this year in Columbia.
“Fairgoers can enjoy everything from roller coasters and petting zoos to art exhibits and livestock shows,” USA Today said. “Known for its mix of traditional and quirky food — think fried cookie dough and turkey legs — the fair also hosts live music, games and creative competitions that highlight local talent and agricultural pride.”
The fair website says the S.C. State Fair pays more than $16.6 million in wages with a total economic impact of more than $45.5 million.
Nancy Smith, general manager of the South Carolina State Fair, said the USA Today ranking “reflects the pride, passion, and hospitality that make the South Carolina State Fair so special. “
This year’s theme, is Harvesting Happiness, which she said is about planting seeds that grow into lifelong memories.
Among those seeds is the Ride of Your Life Scholarship program, which awarding more than $500,000 each year to South Carolina high school seniors., she said
The State Agricultural and Mechanical Society began sponsoring the fair in 1869. It now attracts about 400,000 visitors each year for rides, carnival food, farm animals, home crafts and gardening competitions.
