A “gentle” mama dog sacrificed so much for her four puppies — and now, all are getting a second chance in South Carolina.

Autumn the dog was rescued after she was found “clinging to hope.”

“Autumn first appeared on our radar when one of our staff members saw a picture of her on Facebook,” Katie Wofford, marketing assistant for the Greenville Humane Society, told McClatchy News in a Sept. 5 email. “A member of the community had posted a picture of Autumn on the side of the road, scared and emaciated. After seeing that picture, we knew we had to help. And so, we reached out to the original poster, and she was kind enough to catch Autumn and all of her puppies.”

The family arrived at the shelter and started receiving medical attention. That’s when workers made a “heartbreaking” discovery about Autumn.

“While her body showed the devastating toll of prolonged malnutrition and lack of medical care — her babies? They were mostly healthy,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. “Some minor skin issues and a couple of runny noses, but their bellies were full. Somehow, against all odds, this young mama gave everything she had to her little ones.”

The shelter said the mom made it to safety after being abandoned on the roadside. When she was rescued, she was “covered in sores from relentless flea bites” and was “so weak she could barely hold herself up.”

At the shelter, Autumn became known as a “sweet” 1-year-old pup. She started a plan to gain weight and was on a medical hold as of Sept. 8.

“She’s a calm, gentle soul, and loves nothing more than taking naps with her head resting on a human’s lap,” Wofford wrote. “Maybe as she recovers, she’ll grow a bit more spunky!”

Autumn’s four puppies — Chestnut, Hazelnut, Pumpkin and Spice — also are on a medical hold. The family members, who aren’t up for adoption yet, are expected to be in need of foster homes the week of Sept. 8.

Details about the humane society’s adoption process can be found at greenvillehumane.com.
