SC is about to get a new Costco warehouse. Here’s when and where

Costco is continuing its expansion program with 11 new locations since August, including one scheduled to open in October in South Carolina.

Located in Indian Land, South Carolina, outside Charlotte, the store will open Oct. 30.

It joins Target in establishing locations in the unincorporated area in Lancaster County, which had a population of 32,759 in 2023.

Lancaster County Administrator Dennis Marstall told WBTV there are road projects coming to handle the traffic the new stores will bring.

“Our message is that we are working with everyone, developers, state, federal, to see how we can continue to address, not really only to keep up with the growth, but to get ahead of the road planning,” Marstall told the TV station.

Lancaster County voters voted down a 1% roadway tax during the last election and it will be on the ballot again in November.

Also in October, Costco, a membership-driven bulk retailer, will open stores in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Fruitport, Michigan.

A Costco Business Center will open in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Costco has stores in eight countries around the world and is headquartered in Issaquah, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. It opened its first store, then called Price Club, in 1976 in a converted airplane hangar in San Diego to serve small businesses. It was named for the owner Sol Price.

By 1983 Price Club and CostCo merged and the company opened membership to all, establishing the first Costco warehouse in Seattle. The company has annual sales exceeding $64 billion.

The company recently announced people with $130 a year annual executive memberships would be allowed to shop beginning at 9 a.m. — an hour earlier than regular Costco members.

Costco has six other locations in South Carolina: Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, Spartanburg, Mount Pleasant and Myrtle Beach.
