More than a million bags of shredded cheese have been recalled in South Carolina and 30 other states.
Manufactured by Great Lakes Cheese Company of Hiram, Ohio, the company said the product may contain metal fragments. This is the same company that recalled shredded cheese for having metal fragments in October.
The cheese was sold under dozens of brand names at Target, Walmart, Aldi and other major retailers.
The Food and Drug Administration said the types of cheeses were shredded mozzarella, shredded Italian-style, shredded pizza-style, mozzarella and provolone shredded blends and mozzarella and Parmesan shredded cheese blends.
The company said in a statement Thursday that in early October a supplier of Low-Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella cheese notified them they were recalling cheese they had supplied ]due to foreign material.
“Great Lakes Cheese immediately isolated the affected raw material in our facilities and took action to remove packaged goods containing this item. We instructed retailers to remove the products from store shelves after the announcement in October,” the statement said,
On Dec. 1, FDA released its classification of the recall as Class II., the company said.
“While the status of the recall is marked as ongoing in the enforcement report, our records show all product has been fully removed from store shelves,” they said. “This voluntary action was taken in alignment with Great Lakes Cheese’s unwavering commitment to food safety, product quality, and consumer health and safety. No other products manufactured or packaged by Great Lakes Cheese were affected.”
Among the brands recalled were Borden, Laura Lynn, Lucerne Dairy Farms, Good & Gather, Freedom’s Choice, Econo, Food Club and Happy Farms.
The FDA said if there is uncertainty about a recalled product err on the side of safety and throw it out.
The FDA says the cheese was distributed to Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, as well as Puerto Rico.
The sell-by dates are between February and March 2026.

The company has won nearly 40 Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the last five years at the World, U.S. and New York State Fair championships.
