Here are 41 of the worst rated SC nursing homes in 2026, latest federal ranking show
It’s a tough time for nursing homes and their residents.
The most recent data from 2025 shows that there are around 1.24 million residents in nursing homes across the United States, according to KFF, a leading U.S. health policy tracker. In 2021, the number of residents was only 1.1 million.
While the number of residents has increased, the number of nursing homes has gone down.
Between 2015 and 2025, the number of nursing home facilities declined by 6%. These factors increase the possibility of nursing homes being spread thin for resources and residents not getting the full attention they need.
And South Carolina is also facing some challenges regarding poorly rated nursing home facilities.
Conditions in South Carolina
Residents who end up in a nursing home deserve reliable care. Unfortunately, not every facility in South Carolina is known for their outstanding operations.
Based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ five-star rating system for nursing homes, of the 187 nursing homes examined in SC, 41 have the worst one-star rating. Eight facilities were cited for potential issues related to abuse.
There are over 16,000 residents living in SC certified nursing homes, as of 2025.
Conditions are not entirely negative, though. The Palmetto State still has 35 nursing homes with a five-star rating.
