For your best chance to win the lottery in SC, buy from one of these 11 stores, data shows
If you’re looking for lucky lottery stores, look no farther than two South Carolina convenience stores at BP stations, one in Columbia, the other in Summerville.
Krishna of Summerville sold 16 winning tickets over the past five years, amounting to $2,945,000 million in winnings. One person won $2 million on a $20 scratcher.
Harry’s at 10229 Two Notch Road in Columbia sold 27 winning tickets, with a prize total of $2,720,400 million.
Harry’s No. 4 at 9900 Two Notch Road in Columbia sold the third most winning tickets at 17 with a total of $720,400 in winnings.
These represent winning tickets valued at more than $10,000, according to South Carolina Lottery Commission data.
Deoaney Rowell, manager at Krishna, said the woman who won the $2 million is a regular customer, a working single mother who still plays.
“She still wins,” Rowell said. “Some people just have more luck.”
Last October, a Krishna customer won $375,000, she said.
She said she didn’t know but wasn’t surprised that her store had the most winning tickets.
“We just have a regular customer base and our store is mainly for the lottery,” she said.
It helps that it is located at the busy intersection of Dorchester Boulevard and Ladson Road, she said.
She thinks the lottery business has grown mainly by word of mouth.
“Families, hard-working people,” she said.
Most of the wins are not accounted for in the Lottery Commission report because they are $500 here, $100 there on scratch offs or Pick 3 or Pick 4, all of which are popular.
Rowell didn’t have any winning insights, although it does happen, as rumor has it, that the first and last tickets in a bunch are winners. Sometimes, she has seen $500 winners back to back.
Her store has more than 100 slots for lottery tickets, plus Powerball, MegaMillions and the state-run games.
The Lottery Commission report said the top 11 retailers did not have any MegaMillions winners and two sold Powerball tickets that paid $50,000.
A $1.5 million MegaMillions ticket was sold to a woman in the Upstate in March 2019. It was the largest win to date. It has since been eclipsed by a $1.602 billion win in August 2023 in Florida.
Harry’s bills itself as the “luckiest store to win lottery” on Instagram and posts winning on Facebook. They had a $100,000 winner on a $20 ticket March 7. They also post the winningest numbers for each month on a white board and call it Harry’s Happy Box.
