If you need a refresher on the first Alex Murdaugh murder trial, television has some shows — so many shows — for you to consider.

Real, imagined and otherwise.

The media frenzy was real. All the major networks, cable, and scripted shows have been broadcast in the years since Murdaugh was accused of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at their Lowcountry estate in June 2021.

The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh’s conviction in an order released Wednesday. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson responded his office would “aggressively seek to retry” Murdaugh “as soon as possible.”

Murdaugh’s lawyers said, “We look forward to a new trial conducted consistent with the Constitution and the guidance this Court has provided.”

The court said Murdaugh was denied his right to a fair trial because of Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill’s “improper external influences on the jury.”

“Hill placed her fingers on the scales of justice,” the court wrote in its unanimous decision, accusing her of “shocking” interference by suggesting to jurors that they could not trust Murdaugh’s testimony.

It remains to be seen whether a new trial will bring more television, but this one might easily be judged likely.

Murdaugh shows over last 4 years

In 2023, Netflix began its two-season documentary series called, “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.”

This aired just after Murdaugh was convicted. Season 1 featured the murders. In season 2, which the producers labeled, “The Grisly Story Continues,” features interviews with jurors, prosecutors, witnesses, and former friends of the Murdaugh family, including Cousin Eddie, Curtis Edward Smith, Alex Murdaugh’s friend and former client.

Also interviewed were Morgan Doughty, Paul Murdaugh’s ex-girlfriend; Creighton Waters, lead prosecutor; and Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson, the Murdaughs’ former housekeeper. The seven-part series Fall of the House of Murdaugh aired on Fox Nation in 2023. It was hosted by Martha MacCallum, a Fox News anchor. The series included the first interview with the only surviving son Buster Murdaugh, jurors and an episode about Becky Hill and Murdaugh’s lawyers asking for a new trial.

Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty aired on HBO Max in 2022 and in three episodes showed the influence of the Murdaugh family.

This aired before Murdaugh was convicted so deals with the allegations, past deaths associated with the Murdaugh family and the unveiling of Murdaugh’s financial crimes.

The three-part docuseries showed the prominence of the Murdaughs in their Lowcountry community that was marred by Alex Murdaugh’s fraud and deception.

The show “questions the unchecked power of privilege — and the trail of death and destruction left in one family’s wake,” the news release on the show said.

ABC’s 20/20 has featured the Murdaugh murders several times, including a two-hour primetime special titled “The Murdaugh Family Murders,” which premiered on October 31, 2025.

Hosted by ABC News anchor David Muir, the show featured interviews with several South Carolina reporters including The State’s John Monk as well as the son of Murdaugh’s former housekeeper Gloria Satterfield and the parents of Mallory Beach.

Satterfield died after falling on the steps of the Murdaugh home. The settlement was one of Murdaugh’s many financial crimes. Beach died when a boat piloted by Paul Murdaugh crashed near Bluffton in 2019.

Discovery Plus ‘Murdaugh Murders: Deadly Dynasty,” a three-part series, aired in June 2022. The show included never-before-seen footage of the family and the number of tragedies associated with them.

Other shows include “Alex Murdaugh: Death. Deception. Power” on Oxygen and “Dateline: Murdaugh: Power, Privilege & Scandal” on NBC.

Fictionalized accounts

Among the scripted series — in other words based on a true story, but not a documentary — are Hulu’s Murdaugh Death in the Family starring Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette and Jason Clarke based on South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney’s book “Blood on Their Hands.”

The eight episode series envisions the Murdaughs high society life, the boat crash and the deaths of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.

Lifetime has a two-part movie version starring Bill Pullman as Alex Murdaugh. Pullman has appeared in dozens of movies and is known for varied roles from president to a ghost in such movies as “While You Were Sleeping,” “Independence Day,” Casper” and “Spaceballs.”

Playing Alex’s wife Maggie is Lauren Robek and son Paul is Curtis Tweedie.

It was the first fictionalized account of the Murdaugh story.
