Man held in York County jail for three days dies after being found unconscious
South Carolina state police are investigating after a York County jail inmate who had been in custody for three days died after he was found unconscious in a medical emergency, officials said.
The identity of the 40-year-old man has not been released as the State Law Enforcement Division and York County Coroner investigate.
Detention officers found the man not breathing around 6:30 a.m. Sunday and staff started life-saving measures, York County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Trent Faris said.
EMS arrived and then transported him to a hospital where he died around 7:15 a.m.
The man was taken into custody Thursday after his probation was revoked, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff Tony Breeden notified SLED and, in keeping with office policy, asked for an outside investigation.
The sheriff’s office operates the 585-bed jail that houses both men and women located in the Moss Justice Center in York.
The in-custody death is the first in 2026. In 2025 there were three inmate deaths.
