The state of South Carolina has just over 1,000 open jobs on its careers website, and about 100 of them have top salaries of $100,000 or more.
The highest paid opening is for a chief legal counsel in the Department of Commerce with a salary range of $132,900 to $252,500 a year.
It’s based in Richland County and involves being the main legal advisor to the secretary of Commerce, the deputy secretary and others in the leadership team.
“Provides practical, timely, and business-minded legal guidance that supports the agency’s mission while protecting the legal, financial, operational, and reputational interests of the State,” the job post says.
The state is looking for someone who knows public sector law, administrative law, contracts, procurement, ethics, public records, public meetings, confidentiality, governance, compliance, and risk management.
Required is a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in South Carolina and experience in a public sector, corporate, economic development, government affairs, transactional, administrative, regulatory, public finance, or related environment.

Project management office director in the Department of Administration at a salary of $132,900 to $252,500 a year.
Located in Richland County, the job entails directing the “Division’s enterprise project portfolio to ensure initiatives align with strategic priorities, business objectives, and available resources,” the job post says,
It requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, information technology, engineering, or a related field and five years of experience leading enterprise technology projects, programs, or portfolios, including “responsibility for strategic planning, governance, organizational change, stakeholder engagement, and project delivery.”
The Department of Transportation is looking for a deputy chief of staff at a salary between $156,000 and - $210,500.00 a year.
Located at the Transportation Department’s headquarters, the job involved advising Secretary of Transportation Justin P. Powell on state and federal legislative policy and works with the leadership team to develop legislative and policy agendas.
The job requires a bachelor’s degree and nine years of relevant program management experience.
The Department of Corrections is looking for a regional director of operations in Columbia at a salary between $133,800 and $175,400 a year.
The job entails overseeing the management of some correctional institutions and inspecting them, tracking trends and identifying red flags detrimental to the institutions and responding to emergencies.
If there is an escape, they participate in apprehending inmates.
Required is a bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in administrative services, public administration or business management in a maximum security correctional setting, including four years in a supervisory capacity.
Or an associate degree and 12 years of experience or a high school diploma and 14 years of experience.
The Department of Education is hiring an AI solutions delivery lead at a salary of $92,300 to $175,400. Located in Lexington County, the job involves being the technical leader in the AI Strategy & Adoption group.
Requirements are a bachelor’s degree in communications, business administration, information technology, mathematics, statistics, management information science or a related field and experience in telecommunications, data processing and/or information technology.
The agency prefers a bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, information technology, or a related field and five years of progressive experience in technology.
First Steps is looking for a chief of early learning at a salary between $92,300 and $175,400 a year.
Located in Richland County, the job involves overseeing school readiness scores and quality improvement across all publicly funded four-year-old classrooms.
The person in this position reports to agency director Ann Vandervliet and supervises and trains staff.
Minimum requirements are a Master’s degree in early childhood education, public health, public administration, business education, or a related field. A graduate or doctoral degree is preferred.
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities is looking for a forensics nurse practitioner at Bryan Psychiatric Hospital in Columbia.
The salary is between $107,700 and $156,100 a year.
“As the Nurse Practitioner Institutional under the supervision of the Medical Director, Medical Chief of Forensic Inpatient Services and assigned Physician Collaborator, you will provide direct patient care in the Forensics Program,” the job post says. “Assist in the organization and monitoring of the evaluation and treatment of the Forensics Inpatient Hospital.”
The forensic inpatient hospital is a specialized, secure psychiatric facility that treats individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
Minimum requirements are to graduate from an accredited school of nursing with clinical experience and an accredited school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing. Also, required is a nursing license and official recognition by the Board as a Nurse Practitioner practicing in the extended role and authorized for prescriptive authority in South Carolina.
“Must be able to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors. Including but not limited to combative, threatening, acting out and unpredictable violence,” the job post says.
The Department of Public Safety is hiring an attorney to act as a prosecutor in the Midlands.
The salary is $79,600 to $143,300 a year.
“These positions assist our law enforcement officers with the prosecution of magistrate level offenses in the courts of South Carolina,” the job post says.
That means cases involving driving under the influence cases in summary courts in Aiken, Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Lee, Kershaw, Fairfield, Newberry, Saluda, Lancaster, and Edgefield.
“As a field prosecutor, you will be assigned to a Highway Patrol troop where you will be embedded with the officers in the field,” the job post says.
This position reports to the assistant general counsel.
Required is a juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and five years experience as a practicing attorney.
The University of Charleston is looking for a senior data analyst at a salary of $79,600 to $143,300.
The job involves data management, data integration and ETL/ELT, data analysis and reporting, support and training, business intelligence strategy and project management.
Requirements are a bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Math, or a related field and five years of applicable experience in data analysis and warehousing is required.
A Master’s degree is preferred.
