SLED investigating female detainee’s death in Aiken County

State authorities are investigating the Friday death of a female detainee who was being held at the Aiken County Detention Center, the Aiken County Sheriff’s office reported Friday.

The detainee, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, went into medical distress of an unspecified nature around 4:15 a.m.

While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, deputies and jail medical personnel performed life-saving efforts, the release states. The detainee was taken to the Aiken Regional Medical Center for treatment. She died Friday afternoon.

The State Law Enforcement Division, per standard operating procedure, was called in to investigate the death, Sheriff Michael Hunt said.
