Man accused of trying to kill Estill police officer

A 27-year-old Hampton County man is charged with attempted murder after police say he opened fire on officers, injuring one.

The State Law Enforcement Division says Malcolm Orr of Estill is also charged with possessing a weapon during a violent crime. The two felonies carry a combined maximum sentence of 35 years in prison.

WTOC reports officers responded to a call about a disturbance at a convenience store and briefly chased a man, who opened fire and fled. Estill officer Quincy Smith was wounded.

Police say Smith underwent surgery at a Savannah, Georgia, hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to SLED, officers’ body camera footage identified Orr.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry says Smith never drew his weapon.

Orr is in Hampton County jail.
