Hilton Head Island considers restricting summer fishing

The town of Hilton Head Island is considering banning fishing from the beach during the summer.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported some town council members are worried that fishing on the beach might attract sharks to shallow water.

The proposal would ban fishing on the beaches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

But Mayor David Bennett says it would be a bad idea to tell tourists they cannot fish on the beach of the resort island.

Councilman Lee Edwards says it would be better to impose the restrictions only on the busiest sections of the beaches on the island.

The issue is expected to come up again at a meeting later this month.
