After hours-long standoff with law enforcement, man shot and killed on Saturday
The Florence County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting shortly after noon Saturday that followed an hours-long standoff between county deputies and a man barricaded in a house, the Florence County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Chesterfield County deputies responded to reports of a shooting on Westfield Creek Church Road outside Chesterfield around 9:15 p.m. Friday.
They arrived to find a man barricaded in a house who fired shots at them, the release stated. Re-enforcements were called to the scene along with a State Law Enforcement Division SWAT team.
Overnight, authorities attempted to negotiate a peaceful solution, but “over the course of the standoff the suspect fired numerous times at officers,” the sheriff’s department stated.
Shortly after noon, the man walked out of the house and “challenged law enforcement with a firearm and officers returned fire.”
Emergency first aid failed to revive the man. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital, the release stated. His identity has not been released pending notification of the next of kin.
The shooting is the 18th officer involved shooting in the state so far this year. In 2015, there were 48 officer involved shooting incidents, according to statistics kept by the State Law Enforcement Division.
