Seven killed on S.C. roadways over Memorial Day weekend

South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said there were seven road deaths reported over the weekend.

Officials said all of the deaths occurred on U.S. routes, S.C. roads and secondary roads. There were no weather-related fatalities due to tropical depression Bonnie.

In two of the deaths, officials said a seat belt was used, while two others did not use a seat belt. In one wreck, seat belt usage is unknown. One of those killed was a motorcyclist, while one other was a pedestrian.

As of Sunday, 368 people have died on state highways, compared to 381 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015. Of the 249 motor-vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 114 were not wearing seat belts.

Forty-five pedestrians have been killed compared to 45 during the same time period in 2015. Forty-nine motorcyclists have been killed compared to 51 in 2015. Ten bicyclists have died in 2016 compared to nine this time in 2015.
