Wrecks on South Carolina roads kill 11 during holiday weekend
South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said there were 11 road deaths reported over the Fourth of July weekend.
Officials said all of the deaths occurred on U.S. routes, S.C. roads and secondary roads.
In four of the deaths, officials said a seat belt was not used. In two of the deaths, a seat belt was used. Pedestrians accounted for two of the deaths and unhelmeted motorcyclists made up the three other deaths.
As of Monday, 460 people have died on state highways, compared to 473 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015. Of the 306 motor-vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 148 were not wearing seat belts.
Sixty pedestrians have been killed compared to 58 during the same time period in 2015. Sixty-four motorcyclists have been killed compared to 71 this time in 2015. Eleven bicyclists have died in 2016 compared to nine this time last year.
