Skeletal remains found off Hunting Island
A fisherman setting traps Wednesday discovered skeletal remains off Hunting Island, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office reports.
The man was a few hundred yards from Russ Point Boat Landing when he spotted the remains in marsh grass around 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. A pair of blue shorts, similar to a pair purchased June 21 at the Hardeeville Walmart by Connor Pace, were found near the body, the news release said. Pace, 27, of Gainesville, Fla., has been missing since June 21.
The fisherman notified the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, whose officers secured the area and brought in the Sheriff’s Office, the news release said.
The remains are scheduled for examination by forensic pathologists, including a comparison with Pace’s dental records, at the Medical University of South Carolina on Friday, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Pace was last seen on Hilton Head Island on June 21 after he checked into the Holiday Inn Oceanfront.
The next day, his wallet and other personal belongings were found near a lifeguard stand on the beach.
His cellphone and other belongings were inside his hotel room.
Law enforcement was able to track him to the hotel by looking at his credit card records.
