Wrecks on South Carolina roads kill 4 during weekend, pedestrian deaths up from last year

South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said there were four road deaths reported between Friday and Sunday.

Officials said all of the deaths occurred on U.S. routes, S.C. roads and secondary roads.

In two of the deaths, officials said a seat belt was not used. Seat belt use was unknown for one person killed, and the other person who died was a pedestrian.

As of Monday, 579 people have died on state highways, compared to 296 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015. Of the 373 motor-vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 180 were not wearing seat belts.

Eighty-one pedestrians have been killed compared to 65 during the same time period in 2015. Eighty-seven motorcyclists have been killed compared to 94 this time in 2015. Twelve bicyclists have died in 2016 compared to 11 this time last year.
